Brazil - Bituminous Schists leaflet, issued by Brazilian Government, New York World's Fair, 1939

            One of a series of leaflets on minerals issued by the Brazilian Government for the country's pavilion at the New York 1939 World's Fair. A nice take on an industrial subject  - and thanks to John (below) the artist is The artist is Manuel Móra, 1884-1956. He was born in Portugal, moved to Brazil at some point and remained there until his death. He also did a series of postcards for the Rio de Janeiro tourism department.

Bituminous schist is better known in the UK as oil shale - a substance that was exploited in central Scotland for many years and the basis of the Scottish oil and refining industry. The cover shows the plant manufacturing 'Marahuite' products in Marahu, Baia Province.
