Common Crow or Oleander Butterfly - a photo on Flickriver

            The common crow or oleander butterfly (Euploea core) is a common butterfly found in South Asia (southern Pakistan, Sri Lanka, India, Bangladesh, Myanmar, and via the Malay peninsula to Borneo, Sumatra, Sulawesi, Java and Bali in Indonesia) and north Australia. In India it is also sometimes referred to as the common Indian crow, and in Australia as the Australian crow. The common crow is found in open forest and woodland. Often seen in parks and gardens
The medium-sized common crow has about 6,5 - 8,5 cm in wingspan. The wings are glossy black upperside and dark brown underside with white spots along the outer margins. The body has also white marks.
Due to its inedibility, the common crow is mimicked by a few edible butterfly species. The common crow is distasteful due to chemicals extracted from the latex of the food plants consumed in their caterpillar stage. 

De oleandervlinder (Euploea core) is een veel voorkomende vlinder in zuid- en zuidoost Azië en tropisch noord- en oost Australië. 
De vlinder leeft daar in open tropische bossen, op akkers, maar ook in parken en tuinen.
De middelgrote oleandervlinder heeft een vleugelspanwijdte van 6,5 à 8,5 cm. De vleugels zijn zwart aan de bovenkant en donker bruin aan de onderkant met witte vlekken langs de buitenste rand. Het zwarte lichaam heeft ook witte vlekken.
Belangrijke voedselplanten van de rupsen zijn oleander en latex gevende planten. Deze planten bevatten gifstoffen waar met name gewervelde dieren zoals vogels gevoelig voor zijn. De rups slaat dit gif in zijn lichaam op en houdt dat ook als hij vlinder is geworden. 
Het uiterlijk van deze giftige vlinder wordt daarom geïmiteerd door niet-giftige vlindersoorten (mimicry).
Deze opname is gemaakt in de overdekte vlindertuin NaturoSpace in Honfleur (Normandië, Frankrijk).
