Cartoline da Pienza - Postcards from Pienza

            Pienza sorge su un colle che si affaccia a Nord sulle Crete Senesi e a sud sul Monte Amiata. 
Rappresenta la “città ideale” dell’urbanista rinascimentale; fu Papa Pio II, al secolo Enea Silvio Piccolomini, qui nato nel 1405, a concepire l’idea di trasformare il borgo natale di Corsignano secondo le teorie formulate dal famoso architetto Leon Battista Alberti. 
L’opera venne affidata a Bernardo Rossellino, ma venne interrotta dalla morte di Pio I avvenuta nel 1464. 
Rossellino realizzò comunque quattro edifici, tutti concentrati nella monumentale Piazza Pio II: il Palazzo Piccolomini, il Palazzo Vescovile, il Palazzo Comunale e la Cattedrale.
Il centro storico di Pienza è stato dichiarato Patrimonio dell’Umanità dell’Unesco; 
la via principale è il Corso Rossellino, caratterizzato dalla presenza di numerose botteghe che vendono i prodotti caratteristici locali (soprattutto il pecorino).
La passeggiata panoramica di Pienza, rappresentata nella fotografia, si svolge lungo una via parallela a Corso Rossellino, e da essa si può scorgere un bel panorama su tutta la campagna circostante.
Sullo sfondo si nota il fianco della Cattedrale e il Campanile.

Pienza is a village in Tuscany (Italy), located on a hill which sees on one side the zone called “Crete” and on the other side the Amiata Mont. 
Pienza represents the “ideal village” of the Renaissance: it was Pio II Pope, here born in 1405, to conceive the idea to transform the native village of Corsignano according to the theories from the famous architect Leon Battista Alberti. 
The work was given to Bernardo Rossellino, but it was interrupted by the dead of the Pope happened in 1464. 
Rossellino did  4 buildings, all concentrated in the monumental Square Pio II: Piccolomini Palace, Episcopal Palace, the Municipal Palace and the Cathedral.
The Pienza’s historic centre has been inserted in the Unesco World Heritage List; 
the main street is  Corso Rossellino, characterized by the presence of many shops which sell the local products (especially the cheese “Pecorino”).
The panoramic walking in Pienza is set along a street parallel to Corso Rossellino; from it you can see a nice panorama on the surrounding hills.
On the background it is possible to see the side of the Cathedral with its belltower.
