Straußeneier sind die größten Eier einer heute lebenden Vogelart. Sie werden zwischen 15 und 17 cm lang und haben einen Durchmesser von 12,3 bis 13,5 cm. Das durchschnittliche Gewicht beträgt 1400 g. Dies entspricht in etwa 1,2 % des Lebendgewichtes einer Straußenhenne. Im Vergleich zu anderen Vögeln sind die Eier dadurch verhältnismäßig klein, ähnlich wie beim Truthahn. Beim Haushuhn erreicht das Ei rund 3,5 % des Gewichtes der Henne, bei der Wachtel sind es gut 8 %. Die Farbe der Eier reicht von weißlich bis gelblichbraun. Ein Ei setzt sich zu 53,4 % aus Eiklar, 32,5 % aus Dotter und 14,1 % aus Schale zusammen.
