Praying mantis on a cone flower - a photo on Flickriver

            A (probably) male Orthodera novaezealandiae (New Zealand praying mantis) on a Rudbeckia laciniata (cutleaf coneflower) in our garden in Christchurch, New Zealand.

Unprocessed jpeg, straight out of camera.

There are relatively few left of the 100+ or so nymphs that were swarming everywhere back in October (this will be one from that generation, I shared a couple of images of them at the time). Already the ootheca are being laid for the next seasons hatchlings. They grow up so fast!
