Surrounded and overlooked. - a photo on Flickriver

This rather imposing edifice is situated at the George Street end of the Queen Street Mall in Brisbane. These days, what is known otherwise as the Top of the Mall is a rather sad place following the withdrawal of the multi-story Myer store in the adjacent centre and with it the closure of a number of other shops in this stretch. The move to on-line shopping and post COVID blues means that the number of people working and shopping in the city has not returned to pre 2020 levels. In addition, it will be sometime before the rumoured new tenants take up five floors or more left abandoned by Myer. The Mall however remains a busy thoroughfare from the central city across the Victoria Bridge to Southbank but this part, as a retail area, remains pretty much a wasteland.

The building at right is the Lennons, now Chifley at Lennons Hotel, the third Lennons in the city. Lennons is an iconic Brisbane Hotel name, been around since forever! The name change came in 2013 making it sound more glamorous.

My mother taught us youngsters manners on the basis of what would be expected should we ever go to the rather posh old Lennons Hotel (long gone and replaced by this third one, which is now quite old in itself). There are many hotels in Brisbane now that would expect manners far better than Lennons and that are much more "posh" but then, it is 2024 not 1964!
