Isolated and defrocked. - a photo on Flickriver

            This was near the start of a day of cruising the rural back roads that we love to do so much. We started out on the Mitchell Highway heading south east to the large centre of Wellington then hit the secondary road to Orange that follows the railway. First stop was this lovely old church in splendid isolation beside a sign and side road to Dripstone. In the end, we didn't take that road even though Dripstone was less than a kilometre, a layer reconnoiter of google earth showed nothing but a few equally isolated farms and certainly no township.

Well, the church at least has a notebook in facebook and here it is - 

"Ever WONDERED about the pretty, little abandoned CHURCH at DRIPSTONE?
On 18th September 1877, the Roman Catholic Bishop of Bathurst, the Right Reverend Dr Quinn laid the foundation stone of the Dripstone Church featured in this video. The building budget was £200, of which half had been raised by the time of the bishop laid this stone. The Bishop was undertaking a tour of the Wellington district. The tour was the first time a Catholic bishop had ever visited many of these localities and villages. The Sisters of St Joseph were to establish a school there.
Also a place for social activity, community events contributed money for the church’s building fund . In 1909, a sacristy and porch had been added to the building, which had also been lengthened; Bishop Dunne consecrating the renovations. By March 1930, the church, originally constructed of locally made bricks and timber lined, had received an exterior coating of concrete render. This modernization explains why the original mid-Victorian church has the interesting Art Deco flavour it maintains today."

No mention of when it stopped serving the locals.
