1989exinP2 fighting giraffes

We got the chance to witness a fight between these two giraffes. They don't bite, or kick each other with their powerful legs. Instead, they whomp each other with their necks and ossicones. The sounds reverberate through the entire area.

" This spectacle, known as “necking,” is primarily a competition among male giraffes to establish dominance and secure mating opportunities. By swinging their powerful necks and using their ossicones (horn-like structures) as bludgeons, they engage in a display of strength and endurance. This behavior helps determine the strongest male, who then gains preferential access to females. Beyond just mating rights, necking also serves to establish a social hierarchy within the giraffe community, reducing conflict in the long run by clarifying who holds the higher rank." eviroliteracy.org
