Commissioned Officer Quarters; Guard House, U. S. Army, Fort Mott, New Jersey; Fort Mott State Park

            The structure that is identified as the Guard House was built in 1903 along officer row adjacent to the Commanding Officer's quarters. The two buildings are the only remaining officers housing units at Fort Mott. The other officer houses were removed to nearby Fort Delaware. The two buildings represent officer quarters built by the Army during the early 20th century.  When compared to the Commander's quarters, the house in the photograph is rather plain, with few architectural embellishments. The building is in the Fort Mott and Finns Point National Cemetery Historic District on the National Register of Historic Places and is a contributing property. 

Fort Mott was part of a coastal defense complex, with Forts DuPont and Delaware, near the entrance to the Delaware River. Soldiers were regularly stationed at Fort Mott from 1897 to 1922. The federal government maintained a caretaking detachment at the fort from 1922 to 1943.  New Jersey acquired Fort Mott and designated it a state historic site and park in 1947.
