Joana Vasconcelos sculpture Valkyrie Marina Rinaldi (2014),

            The Portuguese artist Joana Vasconcelos solo show “ Beyond", which took place in 2020 at the Yorkshire Sculpture Park was full of dramatic and colourful art .Vasconcelos is best known for her large-scale pieces using fabric, embroidery and stitching, which constitute a feminist attempt to monumentalise the traditionally domestic or feminine task of sewing.
The centrepiece of the exhibition is the 40 ft long “Valkyrie Marina Rinaldi” (2014), which was suspended from the ceiling in the main gallery space. Part of a series inspired by the mythological “Valkyrie” women warriors, the sculpture unfolds across the space with a power and complexity apparently belied by its crocheted and beaded surfaces. This piece was so large it was difficult to find a good position to photograph it .
