Extract from the will of Henry VIII granting a place to Frances Grey in the succession

            Extract from Henry VIII’s will (TNA E/23/4/1), in which he requests that if his daughter Elizabeth, died childless, the throne was to pass to ‘the heyres of the body of the Lady Frances’. Frances Grey was the eldest daughter of Mary Tudor, youngest sister of Henry VIII (named here as the ‘French Quene’). Frances’s heirs were her three daughters, Jane, Katherine and Mary Grey, the first of whom was placed on the throne briefly in July 1553 and executed the following year. The will goes on to specify that if all of her heirs die childless, then it would pass to the children of Frances’s sister, ‘Lady Elyanore’.
