Nineteenth-century miniature of Katherine Parr

‘Portrait of a lady called Katherine Parr’, by Henry Pierce Bone, 1844. Enamel; 4.8 x 3.9cm.

The miniature was purchased by Queen Victoria in 1844, to add to her growing collection of portraits of sixteenth-century figures. It is still part of the Royal Collection.

On the back of the portrait is the following inscription:

‘Katharine Parr / London Febr 1844 / Painted by Henry Pier. / Bone Enamel Painter / to Her Majesty & H.R.H. / Prince Albert &c. From / the Original in / Lambeth Palace.’

The portrait is based on a sixteenth-century painting (artist unknown), that was once believed to depict Katherine Parr, Henry VIII’s sixth wife (see:

However the portrait has recently been reanalysed by the National Portrait Gallery and is now considered to be Katherine of Aragon, Henry VIII’s first wife. Nonetheless, Bone appears to have created the miniature with the intent that it depict Parr. Victoria and Prince Albert purchased a number of miniatures of the six wives of Henry VIII by Bone and his father, fellow artist, Henry Bone.
