Built by the Glenn L. Martin company, the 404 was developed from the 202 and first flew in 1950. Both, the Martin 202 and 404, were designed to compete with the Convair Liner range, but while the CV.240 was pressurized form the start, the Martin 202, although earlier in production than the Convair, was unpressurized and had a poor reception. The 404 was eventually pressurized, but came in too late to successfully conquer the Convair Liners. Subsequently only 103 examples were built between 1951 and 1953.

This particular one was built for Eastern Air Lines in 1952 and later flew with Southern Airways before being acquired by Marco Island Airways as N973M in 1976. Marco Island Airways were established in 1972 to link the Gulf-coast community of Marco Island to the rest of Florida, and scheduled routes included Miami, Tampa and Lakeland. Marco Island's six Martins were a very common sight at Miami, as there were several flights each day. On one such flight N973M was seen on short finals to Miami's runway 30, showing Marco Island's simple but elegant blue and green livery.

Marco Island Airways were acquired by PBA in 1984 - another Martin operator - but N973M was withdrawn from use circa 1985, stored at an unknown location and eventually broken-up.
