This Dakota - another one with dual construction number - was delivered to the USAF in early 1945, and soon after transferred to the Royal Air Force, who used it until 1952, when it was sold to East African Airways in Kenya, initially as VP-KJQ. In 1964 when Kenya got independent, the registration changed to 5Y-AAE, and as such it was eventually acquired by Nairobi-based Sunbird Aviation in early 1984.

It was based at Nairobi-Wilson airport, together with sistership 5Y-BBN, and was captured basking in the warm afternoon sun, ready for the next trip. Wilson airport handled most of the tourist flights to the various game reserves, and Sunbird's DC-3s were busy flying tourists in and out. 

Later in 1987, Sunbird merged with Air Kenya, who continued to use 5Y-AAE until the early nineties, after which it was sold to Australia, and then to South Africa in 1998. It was reported as active at Lanseria as late as 2002. After the South African marks were cancelled in 2007, its fate is unknown, but it's believed that the aircraft went to the Democratic Republic of Congo, and crashed there in unknown conditions at an unknown date.
