Rocks of Little Rhody, Part 10: On Another Stretch of Shore | Newport, Rhode Island, USA

Taken just a little to the west-northwest of the intersection Ocean and Winans Avenues, on the shoreline about one-third of the way down from Castle Hill to Brenton Point. Facing southwestward.

We’re on a different stretch of coastline now, about 1.25 road mi / 2 km via Ocean Avenue from the site shown in Part 9. But we’re still in the domain of the Neoproterozoic Newport Neck Formation, that intriguing jumble of Avalonian-terrane turbidites, pelites, slates, tuffs, and olistostromes discussed in the most recent of the preceding posts of this album.

Half a century later, I can’t remember what the exact composition of the mass of bedrock just to seaward of the standing man was. But from this distance it looks pretty slaty to me. In any case, it clearly illustrates that its formation has been deformed during the collision of Africa and North America during the Alleghenian Orogeny and the assembly of Pangaea. I highly suspect that the tilting beds visible here were part of a larger fold structure now mostly removed by erosion in this very high-energy environment.

That high energy, in the form of surf action at the mouth of Narragansett Bay, is also evident in rock rubble along the strand. The beach in this stretch has particle sizes in the cobble-to-small-boulder range. What smaller sediments there were have long since been swept away.
