PISCINA MIRABILIS - MISENE (NA) - a photo on Flickriver

La Piscina mirabilis è un sito archeologico romano che si trova nel comune di Bacoli, nell'area dei Campi Flegrei. Costruita in età augustea a Miseno, sul lato nord-ovest del Golfo di Napoli, originariamente era una cisterna di acqua potabile. La cisterna venne interamente scavata nel tufo della collina prospiciente il porto, ad 8 metri sul livello del mare. A pianta rettangolare, è alta 15 metri, lunga 70 e larga 25, con una capacità di oltre 12.000 metri cubi. È sormontata da un soffitto con volte a botte, sorretto da 48 pilastri a sezione cruciforme, disposti su quattro file da 12.

L'acqua veniva prelevata attraverso i pozzetti realizzati sulla terrazza che sovrasta le volte con macchine idrauliche, e da qui canalizzata verso il porto. La struttura muraria è realizzata in opus reticulatum e, così come i pilastri, è rivestita di materiale impermeabilizzante. Una serie di finestre lungo la sommità delle pareti laterali e gli stessi pozzetti superiori provvedevano all'illuminazione e all'aerazione dell'ambiente. Sul fondo, nella navata centrale, si trova una piscina limaria di 20 metri per 5, profonda 1,10 metri, che veniva utilizzata come vasca di decantazione e di scarico per la pulizia e lo svuotamento periodico della cisterna.

La piscina mirabilis costituiva il serbatoio terminale di uno dei principali acquedotti romani, l'acquedotto augusteo, che portava l'acqua dalle sorgenti di Serino, a 100 chilometri di distanza, fino a Napoli e ai Campi Flegrei. 

The Piscina mirabilis is a Roman archaeological site located in the municipality of Bacoli, in the Campi Flegrei area. Built in the Augustan age in Miseno, on the north-west side of the Gulf of Naples, it was originally a cistern for drinking water. The cistern was entirely excavated in the tuff of the hill overlooking the port, 8 meters above sea level. With a rectangular plan, it is 15 meters high, 70 long and 25 wide, with a capacity of over 12,000 cubic meters. It is surmounted by a barrel-vaulted ceiling, supported by 48 cross-section pillars, arranged in four rows of 12.

The water was drawn through the wells built on the terrace overlooking the vaults with hydraulic machines, and from here channeled towards the port. The wall structure is made of opus reticulatum and, like the pillars, is covered with waterproofing material. A series of windows along the top of the side walls and the upper wells themselves provided for the lighting and ventilation of the environment. At the bottom, in the central nave, there is a lime pool measuring 20 meters by 5, 1.10 meters deep, which was used as a settling and drainage tank for periodic cleaning and emptying of the cistern.

The mirabilis pool was the terminal tank of one of the main Roman aqueducts, the Augustan aqueduct, which brought water from the sources of Serino, 100 kilometers away, to Naples and the Campi Flegrei.
