GM10 at the cross roads? - a photo on Flickriver

            There come a tide and sometimes driven by forces beyond the normal a new road has to be taken. But not all is as it seems. Indeed GM10 has ridden these rails back when the MC CM services between Griffith and Melbourne, or vice versa where not run by Pacific National. It had temporary provided motive power in those days and now is providing motive power to the bi-annual run along the lines to from Griffith from the eastern side. The Roto (Hillston) - Griffith only gets tested once a year, but this side twice thanks to the passenger services on this branch (Yanco to Griffith). You can tell it running on the AK cars as the camera has been attached to GM10 while GM22 had shunted first from lead to second unit already.

And today tide has necessitated change because the horn of GM22 could not be stopped and had to be disabled. Which meant GM10 with functional horn had to lead. With a derailer too close to run both engines around at once, it was a slow and complicated shunt of turning both engines, one at a time. Shunting the triangle which in the case of this spur is the entry to Coprice, or Leeton rice mill. Hence the buildings in the background are functional elements of an existent rail customer with an unusual access to the line. Rather ingenious of the planners of the branch between Yanco and Griffith to incorporate a triangle into the yard design to both facilitate turning of locomotives but to access a siding. Well planned because like Canberra ACT and Griffith NSW Leeton, NSW was planned by Walter Burley Griffin. Leeton in a layout of a Roman towns like layout. Hence in all these places the circular streets often replace the traditional grid pattern. They stand testament to the Murrumbidgee Irrigation Area and the development of irrigation agriculture opening up predominantly large sheep stations to more intensive agriculture which first developed was to be transported by rail.

And so while it had this unplanned stop and shunt in Leeton the clouds rolled in so by the time it left, it was throughly grey, incredible dull, leaving my son and I time to laugh as we drove home sedately after seeing this pleasurable diversion. The tide had run in our favour for a while at least
