Lest We Forget - ‘sermon in stone against the futility of war’ - Walter S. Allard.

This is the final image in this series for Remembrance Day featuring the sculptures and memorial of Vimy Ridge by Walter S. Allard.

Words alone cannot do justice to the human sacrifice, the tragic cost in human lives of the battles at Vimy Ridge. However, Walter S. Allard, the architect and sculptor, mastermind of the memorial, did include words and not just allegorical sculptures alone in this memorial. The names of 11,000 Canadian servicemen who died and have no known grave are carved into its sides. The youngest soldier commemorated on the memorial is 15 years old and there are seventeen young soldiers aged 16 years old.

The futility of war referred to by Allard is very apparent at Vimy Ridge. France, Britain and Germany had been engaged for several years here at the ridge with casualties: 150,000 French, 150,000 British, 85,000 German (estimate) and more than 10,000 Canadians.
