Shore Temple, Mahabalipuram - a photo on Flickriver

            Maha-Malla-Puram (City of the Great Wrestler) - one of the titles of Narasimha Varman I - after which the port city was established by the Pallavas to connect its court to the profits of the Indian Ocean trade.

His great grandson Narasimha Varman II was a great patron of architecture having overseen the constructions of the Shore Temple in Mamallapuram and the Kailasanathar Temple in Kanchipuram, another strategic city in the Pallava Empire.

The Pallavas had a long standing feud with the Chalukyas. The architectural arms race was an indication of their political struggles - temples weren't necessarily a consequence of devotion alone. 

The Varaha sculpture in the temple tank isn't accompanied by the Earth Goddess - it is believed that the Chalukyas may have attempted to / and shattered it.
