Der südlich des Olympiageländes anschließende Olympiapark nimmt in mehrerer Hinsicht eine Sonderstellung ein. Der Architekt Günter Behnisch hatte die Idee, die Sportstätten mit See und angrenzenden Hügeln in eine „Olympische Landschaft“ umzuwandeln. Das Konzept dieser „Olympischen Spiele im Grünen“ hatte zur Folge, dass die Architektur der Bauten vom Standpunkt der Grünanlagen bestimmt wurde. Um die Verschmelzung der Bauten mit dem Olympiapark zu unterstützen wurden zum Beispiel die Sitze im Olympiastadion grün gestaltet.
Mit 160 Hektar gehört der Olympiapark zu den größten Grünanlagen Münchens.

Auf dem Oberwiesenfeld wurde 1965 bis 1968 der Olympiaturm nach Plänen von Sebastian Rosenthal in Zusammenarbeit mit der Deutschen Bundespost durch das Baureferat der Landeshauptstadt München errichtet. Der seit 2005 291,28 Meter hohe Fernsehturm ist also vorolympisch und wurde nachträglich zum Wahrzeichen des Olympiaparks. (Technik-)Optimismus und Pressefreiheit sollen durch den Turm symbolisiert werden, was das Konzept der an den Idealen der Demokratie orientierten Spiele unterstreicht.

The Olympic Park to the south of the Olympic site has a special position in several respects. The architect Günter Behnisch had the idea of converting the sports facilities with the lake and adjacent hills into an “Olympic landscape”. The concept of these “Green Olympic Games” meant that the architecture of the buildings was determined from the point of view of the green spaces. In order to support the fusion of the buildings with the Olympic Park, the seats in the Olympic Stadium, for example, were designed green.

The Olympic Tower was built on the Oberwiesenfeld from 1965 to 1968 according to plans by Sebastian Rosenthal in collaboration with the Deutsche Bundespost by the building department of the state capital of Munich. The television tower, which has been 291.28 meters high since 2005, is pre-Olympic and subsequently became a landmark of the Olympic Park.
