Steam Locomotive 88, Railway Station, Minehead, Somerset 26 March 2014

            Steam engine No 88 at Minehead Station, now the terminus of the West Somerset Heritage Railway.

88 was built in 1925 in the works of Robert Stephenson & Co in Darlington. In 1953, the original, larger boiler became unfit for further use, and was replaced with a smaller diameter boiler. It is in Somerset & Dorset Joint Railway Livery, and is another refugee from the Woodham Brothers scrapyard in Barry, rescued in 1968 for restoration.

The S&DJR was formed from the Somerset & Dorset Railway, founded in 1862 and in 1875 following going into receivership, it was taken over jointly by the Midland Railway and the London & South Western Rail Company, becoming known as the Somerset & Dorset Joint Railway.
