The upper Main Street, Broadway, Worcestershire, England

            The interesting parts of Broadway line its long wide Main Street that descends the lower slopes of the notoriously steep Fish Hill. At the bottom, the street opens out into a spacious green lined with the usual mixture of tourist shops. The village's purpose was to aid travellers ascend the hill and has long been commercialised. It was known as 'The painted lady of the Cotswolds', a term that may refer to how it's long used its self-conscious beauty to extract money from visitors. However most visitors venture no further than the shops, and relatively few explore further up the hill where the commercialism finally stops. 

Until 1998 and the construction of the Broadway Bypass, this was the main A44, a major road linking Wales, Worcester and London, and the ever increasing traffic thundered down the hill and struggled even more noisily up it. You took your life in your hands crossing the road and the village, though famously beautiful, was not a relaxing place to visit. Now the main street has returned to its peaceful charm and is mercifully quiet and unspoilt.
