Gloucester Docks Main Basin - a photo on Flickriver

Built in the 1790s, the Main Basin became the terminus of the Gloucester & Sharpness ship canal that was opened in 1827 to stretch the 16 miles from Sharpness on the Severn Estuary. It was a canal that enabled even the largest sailing ships of the day to travel up to Gloucester - the most inland port in England.

Here cargoes of corn and timber brought from all over the world were unloaded, either into warehouses or smaller vessels to be taken further up the River Severn to Birmingham and the Black Country.

In the distance is the North Warehouse (1826-27), built by the Gloucester and Berkeley Canal Company, is the oldest warehouse. Each floor was rented out for the storage of corn or wines and spirits.

On the right the Biddles (1830) and Shiptons (1833) Warehouses became the transhipment depot of The Severn and Canal Carrying Company which operated a fleet of tugs, barges and canal boats. Biddles Warehouse is set apart its larger, round-headed windows. It was built for a wealthy Stroud miller and relects the style of the Stroud Valley cloth mills.

The sailing ship is TS Royalist which is a sail training ship launched in 2014 as a replacement for a previous ship of the same name.

TS ROYALIST is the Sea Cadets flagship, a training brig that takes twenty-four cadets to sea for six day voyages. The vessel was designed by Acubens, built during 2014 / 2015 at the Spanish shipyard of Astilleros Gondan. The Princess Royal officially named the Marine Society and Sea Cadets’ flagship, TS ROYALIST.

Royalist is 34 metres (111 ft 7 in) long, with a beam of 7.36 metres (24 ft 2 in). Her draught is 3.25 metres (10 ft 8 in). The ship's hull is of high tensile steel, with her superstructure of glass reinforced plastic. She will be rigged as a brig,] with a sail area of 536 square metres (641 sq yd). She has a crew of eight, plus up to 24 Cadets and 2 adult trainees. Twelve passengers can also be carried.

Royalist was built by Astilleros Gondán S.A., Spain. She was launched on 19 December 2014. She cost £4,800,000. Replacing the previous TS Royalist, she is designed to be easier to sail than her predecessor, and also faster. Royalist entered service in 2015.
