Palmer Platform - a photo on Flickriver

Palmer Platform

            For Station Saturday here's another take on a regularly featured depot (because I've spent more time trackside here in the last 30 years than just about anywhere else!). 

This is the Central Vermont Railway side of the 1883 built H.H. Richardson designed Union Station that also served the Boston and Albany.  Today it is home to the Steaming Tender Restaurant and is gorgeously restored, though only this side still retains its original cobblestones and a portion of the platform canopy. 

New England Central Railroad trains 608, the turn job up from Willimantic is passing the platform headed south back toward the yard to finish getting their train ready to head south. This is MP 62 on modern day New England Central's Palmer Sub and their train is still on the diamond crossing CSXT's Boston Sub. 608's power is NECR  3049 and 3040 wearing matching RailAmerica paint despite the fact that RA disappeared nearly a dozen years ago when it merged with Genesee and Wyoming.  RailAmerica was itself the successor to Railtex here in 2000, with the latter having formed the NECR in 1995 when it purchased the CV from parent Grand Trunk Corporation, itself a subsidiary of CN.  3049 and 3040 look right at home here (other than the garish paint!) as as both are former CN GP40-2Ws built by GMDD in Jun. and Sep. 1974 as CN 9436 and 9495 respectively.
