With the River Line quiet we headed across the river and started north enjoying some lovely hikes along the way. I timed out the day to capture a few passenger trains along the Hudson Line since freight wasn't cooperating. This is by no means a complaint as I've never photographed this historic and exceptionally scenic route and Amtrak's trains here are the best looking in the country thanks to the fleet of P32AC-DMs dressed in classic Phase III livery with Empire Service decals.

Due to 280's tardiness the next southbound Amtrak train was due only 20 min later affording just enough time to double back south to here. But before Amtrak 240 showed up I was graced with Metro North train 8833 headed back to Grand Central Terminal from Poughkeepsie. Unfortunately all MNRR trains are set up with the locomotives facing north which isn't particularly conducive to photography which was particularly disappointing given that this train had one of the four CDOT owned units painted in full New Haven McGinnis style paint.

They are seen here emerging from the tunnel Main 2 at MP 50 on Metro North's Hudson Line. This is the original New York Central Railroad mainline which opened between New York City and Albany in 1851 as the Hudson River Railroad. The tunnel dates from the line's construction thru here in 1849 but was bypassed sometime later by the cut at right. When when four tracks were installed in the 1920s rails were relaid in the tunnel and have remained so even after the line was again shrunk to double track.

In 1864 the Hudson River Railroad was purchased by Cornelius Vanderbilt along with the New York and Harlem. Meanwhile in 1853 Erastus Corning had assembled a plethora of small local lines as the New York Central Railroad running from Albany to Buffalo and in 1867 Vanderbilt merged it with his road to create the New York Central and Hudson River Railroad and the rest as they say is history.

By the 1950s as the railroad was showing signs of weakness but also modernizing under the leadership of A.E. Perlman. Around that era the four track mainline was equipped with CTC and reduced two two mains. I don't know the specific date this happened, so if anyone here has that information and/or photos of this area immediately before and after the changes I'd love to know and/or see them.
