I went back to this favorite spot on Friday to check on the colors and specifically to capture something for the fall Day In North America for next year's Railroads Illustrated Annual.

The colors were about peak down along the river and the old Boston Line was exceptionally busy with four eastbounds (one of which I missed) and two westbounds passing over the arches in the span of three hours. Man some days the old B&A really still can deliver!

This was the train of the day and only the second time I've been lucky enough to catch the geeps here! This local goes to Palmer every day but only makes the occasional trip east if they have a car for Casella in Auburn or autoracks for East Brookfield that didn't move on dedicated train M205. The latter was the reason this day as they had a dozen loaded racks to deliver before returning light 23 miles to Palmer to make their regular interchange pick up.

CSXT's West Springfield based local L012 is crossing the Quaboag River at about MP 75.5 on CSXT's Boston Subdivision behind a pair of GP40-2s CSXT 6280 and 6245 (blt. Jan. 1980 and Mar. 1989 as CO 4382 and BO 4346 respectively in Chessie System paint). Thanks to a new family of beavers that built a lodge right on the shore (its partially visible on the left back behind those twin trees) about three years ago there are a lot less trees and brush and they have consistently kept this area open and usually I see them when I'm here though not this day.

The ancient twin stone arch bridge dates from the line's construction in 1839 as the Western Railroad, that when completed in 1842 formed the longest and most expensive railroad constructed in the United States up to that point. The Western merged with two other predecessors to form the Boston and Albany Railroad in 1870. Thirty years later the B&A was leased by the New York Central Railroad, and then the line would pass successively to the Penn Central in 1968, Conrail in 1976 and CSXT in 1999. To this day it remains as the preeminent freight route and the only Class 1 trunk line still serving New England...truly a testament to the forethought of those who laid out and built the line over 180 years ago.
