Why do storks and flamingos stand on one leg?
Storks and flamingos are among the migratory birds. Slowly they move in search of food across the ground and through the water. Shrike birds have long, featherless legs. And featherless, that's the keyword. Naked legs are indisputably beneficial when the animals wade through the water. In resting positions, on the other hand, the same as with our limbs, with unfilled parachute legs, happens when our clothes are not thick enough: they become cold. When storks and flamingos stand on one leg, they are concerned with keeping the heat loss as low as possible. They pull a leg back into their well-insulating plumage, so that it stays warm. For the same reason they stick their beak into their feathers when they sleep. ///
Warum stehen Störche und Flamingos auf einem Bein?
Störche und Flamingos gehören zu den Schreitvögeln. Langsamen Schrittes bewegen sie sich auf der Suche nach Nahrung über den Boden und durchs Wasser. Schreitvögel haben lange, federlose Beine. Und federlos, das ist das Stichwort. Nackte Beine sind unbestreitbar von Vorteil, wenn die Tiere durchs Wasser waten. In Ruheposen dagegen geschieht mit ungefiederten Storchenbeinen das gleiche wie mit unseren Gliedmaßen, wenn wir nicht dick genug angezogen sind: Sie werden kalt. Wenn Störche und Flamingos auf einem Bein stehen, geht es ihnen daher darum, den Wärmeverlust so gering wie möglich zu halten. Sie ziehen ein Bein in ihr gut isolierendes Gefieder zurück, damit es warm bleibt. Aus dem gleichen Grund stecken sie ihren Schnabel beim Schlafen in die Federn.
