The Praça do Comércio is one of the three main squares within the Baixa Pombalina, the newly built urban area of the Portuguese capital, Lisbon, due to the 1755 earthquake. Located near the capital's river Tejo, the square is still known under its old name, Terreiro do Paço, or palace grounds, because until the devastating earthquake of 1755, the Paço da Ribeira, the royal waterfront castle, was there. After the earthquake, the site was given a completely new shape as part of the urban redesign initiated by the Marquis of Pombal.

Die Praça do Comércio gehört zu den drei wichtigsten Plätzen innerhalb der Baixa Pombalina, des aufgrund des Erdbebens von 1755 neu gebauten innerstädtischen Bereichs der portugiesischen Hauptstadt Lissabon. Nahe am Hauptstadtfluss Tejo gelegen, ist der Platz noch immer unter seinem alten Namen, Terreiro do Paço, zu Deutsch etwa Palastgelände, bekannt, da sich bis zum verheerenden Erdbeben von 1755 das Paço da Ribeira, das königliche Uferschloss, dort befand. Nach dem Erdbeben erhielt das Gelände eine völlig neue Form im Rahmen der durch den Marquis von Pombal veranlassten städtischen Umgestaltung.
