"De Witte Swaen"

            "De Witte Swaen" or the "White Swan" was the ship with which Willem Barentsz discovered the Arctic archipelago of Spitsbergen and Bear Island in 1596. Here in Harlingen, the ship was faithfully rebuilt over years of work in the same way that shipbuilders did in 16th century Holland. Many of the techniques that shipbuilders used to build ships are now long outdated. But after years of studying 16th century shipwrecks, scouring old diaries and analyzing a discovered piece of wreckage, the ship has been rebuilt. The first sea trial took place in autumn 2023.

"De Witte Swaen" oder der "Weiße Schwan" war das Schiff, mit dem Willem Barentsz 1596 das arktische Archipel Spitzbergen und die Bäreninsel entdeckte.
Hier in Harlingen wurde das Schiff originalgetreu in jahrelanger Arbeit wieder aufgebaut und das auf die gleiche Weise, wie es die Schiffsbauer im Holland des 16. Jahrhunderts taten. Viele der Techniken, die Schiffbauer zum Bau von Schiffen verwendeten, sind heute längst überholt. Aber nach jahrelangem Studium von Schiffswracks aus dem 16. Jahrhundert, dem Durchforsten alter Tagebücher und der Analyse eines entdeckten Wrackteils ist es gelungen, das Schiff wieder aufzubauen. Die erste Probefahrt fand im Herbst 2023 statt.
