Kosaken-Denkmal | Cossack Monument - a photo on Flickriver

"The Cossack Monument - a pipe-smoking Cossack on a stone and his grazing horse - was unveiled on September 15, 2003 in Vienna's Türkenschanzpark to celebrate the 320th anniversary of the Second Turkish Siege of Vienna. It commemorates the participation of the Ukrainian Cossack army in the relief battle of September 12, 1683. At the same time, it also serves as a symbol of identification of the young Ukrainian nation and as a sign of its turning towards Europe.

The relief army that fought against the Ottoman forces in 1683 consisted of Austrian, German and Polish-Lithuanian troops under the supreme command of the Polish King Jan III Sobieski. [...] Seven Cossack regiments or about 3000 Cossacks formed the core part of the Polish relief army on the right wing. [...] In addition, numerous Ukrainians fought in other units. [...]

One of the aims of the monument erection was to draw attention to the fact that the role of the Ukrainian Cossacks as part of the relief army had been forgotten and the successes were mainly attributed to the Polish king Sobieski. By 1683, the western Ukrainian territories from which the Cossack troops had been recruited were under the control of the Polish crown. Therefore, for a long time, the military achievements of the Cossacks were not specifically appreciated, but subsumed under those of the Kingdom of Poland. Against the background of the independence of the young Ukrainian state since 1991, the construction of a national identity played a special role.
