Oscar sitting in the sunshine minding his own business ... 5-29-12

            I will try to make this a short story, even though there are a lot of photos!!!  Only cause Oscar (I gave him that name...not his Mom!) might be a she, but for this story it's a he and he's Oscar!!!

I went down to our back yard to take some photos of my Gardenias.  I seen one hanging in the sunlight and thought the light was really pretty. I took a step, towards it when I heard a tiny peep!  I nearly stepped on him!!

I wasn't sure what kind of bird he was because so many look the same at this age.  I was going to pick him up and look for his nest because there are snakes where I was and our neighbor has about 6 or 7 cats they don't feed.

As I went towards him to pick him up, he got up and that's when I knew it was a Brown Thrasher, which is also our State Bird in Georgia!!!  He got up a little and then took a few steps.  His little nub tail was so cute and that fuzz on his head just cracked me up!!!

He gave me a couple dirty looks after about the 100th photo I took of him and then I heard this other chirping noise.  I expected to be dive bombed several times by the parents, but to my delightful surprize, she was quite sweet and never threatened me at all.

I found the whole thing hysterical because she had this huge bug in her beak and she was trying to call him to her at the same time, while staying away from me and making him stay away from me.  It's kind of hard to talk with your mouth full!!

I'm going to blame his confusion on being a baby, but he really was dumb!!!  Mom would call him from behind the gardenia bush and he would beep and run towards me!!  She would get frantic cause he was going the wrong way, so she would come out and show herself to him and beep again and then he would run the other way but not towards her!  I never moved because I didn't want to make things worse, but I was laughing inside and laughing loud!!!  My inside laugh, you know, when you don't want people to know you're laughing at them???

Well, the two of them were doing a dance that was just too funny, so finally I thought I would back way up and see if Mom would come up to him and she did!!  I was so excited that the photos I took of her feeding him were just awful!!!  I am putting one on here of after she fed him that huge bug and giving him a look that she couldn't believe he ate the whole thing!!!  It's not a good photo, sorry about that!

She finally got him back into the woods where I think I heard more babies.  I read up on them only to find out that they have their nests very low to the ground, usually in the bushes or right on the ground AND that the parents, especially the mother, is very aggressive and has been known to peck dogs and people so hard they have drawn blood, when getting too close to their babies!!!

I guess she knew I meant no harm and just wanted to make Oscar a star!!!!  So here they are...Oscar and his Mom!!
