The Beetle

            Maine Northern Railway Train 503-24 heads to Easton, ME to tie down for the day on 11/24/2023.

This section of the Fort Fairfield Sub is part of the Oakfield-Houlton-Presque Isle-Van Buren main line. The line was cut back in sections, with the section from Phair a few miles behind me, to Houlton being removed. Along with the section from Caribou to Van Buren. 

Today the line is operated once a week, with the local serving JM Huber, a OSB manufacturer in Easton which takes inbound cars of resin, while shipping outbound loads of OSB in boxcars. The McCain french fry plant is also served, with the operation getting loads of cooking oil. A few miles to the north, Cavandish Agriculture (like the railroad a subsidiary of JD Irving)  gets loads of fertilizer. The remaining track into Fort Fairfield propper is only in service for a few miles and is used for car storage. The remining track into downtown hasn't seen a train in over a decade, since the old McCain plant was torn down and scrapped.

Typically, the PI local heads north in the morning, works the industrial park, before heading to Easton where sometimes they serve the customers before tying down. A night crew usually takes the train back to Squapan with a pick up in Presque Isle of the cars from the industrial park.
