Abutilon megapotamicum (trailing abutilon) on limestone ledge

            I lost my variegated abutilon to last season's harsh winter.  This is one of three that I bought to replace it.  (Why three?)

Origin: Brazil
Mallow family (Malvaceae) 

Commonly called "Flowering Maple" or "Chinese Lantern," it is neither maple nor Chinese.  It originates from Brazil and is a member of the hibiscus family (Hibiscus acetosella has the same maple-shaped leaves).   Abutilon megapotamicum can reach 8 to 10 feet in height, but in temperate climate cultivation, it rarely exceeds 3 feet tall.  

From late spring until frost the plants are laden with  hanging red and yellow "lanterns."   In warmer climates the plant is evergreen.  There are reports of the plant growing in colder climates where it dies back in the winter but comes back in late spring if heavily mulched.  

It can be trained onto a trellis or arch because of the slight vining nature.  It also does well grown in pots.
