Once-Known Kanien’Kenhaka or Skaru-re Artist(s) Tree early 20th century

            The Celestial tree references the Hotinonshon:ni creation story; it’s life-giving fruit (shown here with a strawberry, a sacred fruit and medicine) and its roots open a portal between the realms of Karonhia:ke (Skyworld) and earth. Many women’s hands likely went into this work, as our grandmothers worked together. The work was often divided among family members young and old, from drawing and cutting patterns to counting and threading the beads. This piece may have been originally sold at a Niagara Falls souvenir shop.
