DEVA: Piata Victoriei, Casei de cultura, Statuia lui Decebal

            Decebal was a Dacian king who ruled from 87 to 106. He was the first Romanian leader against any foreign oppression.

After the death of the great king Burebista in 44 BC. BC, the Dacia is divided between four or five small kingdoms. This situation continues until Decebal attempts to consolidate the heart of Dacia around Sarmizegétusa. He reorganized the Dacian army, and in 85 the Dacians began to attack the fortified Roman province of Mesia, south of the Danube.
Roman Emperor Domitian decides to send his Prefect of the Praetorian guards, Cornelius Fuscus, to punish and conquer the Dacians with four or five legions. Two Roman legions fall in an ambush and are killed in Tapae (Transylvania village, near present-day Bucova) and Cornelius Fuscus was killed. 
In 88, Lucius Tettius Iulianus commands another Roman army in a campaign against the Dacians, but he is pushed back, and as the German revolts on the Rhine require military intervention in the west of the Empire, the Romans choose to buy peace on the Danube by paying large sums in tribute to the 
This humiliating situation for the Romans lasts until Trajan's accession to the throne of the Roman Empire in 98. Restored peace on the Rhine, Trajan engages in a series of military campaigns, which will extend the Roman Empire to its maximum limits.
In the year 100, Trajan raises an army that spends the winter in Mesia and crosses the Danube in the spring of the year 101. Trajan does not pass immediately the Danube and it is Decébal who comes to meet in Mesia. Decebal is defeated in the new battle of Tapae, but retains his throne by changing status: he becomes king "client" and under Roman protectorate. Yet, three years later, Decebal broke the treaty and attacked the Roman garrisons in Dacia, forcing the Romans to send further reinforcements.
After the long siege of Sarmizegetusa in 106, and multiple battles, the Romans finally conquered Dacia. Decebal, his defeated army, commits suicide in order not to end up a slave or, like Vercingetorix in Rome, in a dungeon.
