Aerial Workshop

            This Nephila edulis female is a large Australian golden orb spider (female 40mm; male 7mm). The female of the species spins, weaves and maintains a large, sometimes golden web about a metre in diameter with tethering from tree to tree, buildings or the ground over several metres. Over weeks the web can sustain large amounts of damage and collects windblown debris which despite occasional repair and care can make the web an untidy mess. Added to the mess is a line-up of captured insects and spiders constituting her larder. No males were visible around this web — they keep their distance lest an inopportune advance results in their being eaten by the female.
