            Abbeydene, or Lismara as it was originally called, was designed by architect-engineer Sir Charles Lanyon.  

Lanyon's more notable designs include the main building of Queen's University and Belfast Custom House.

Abbeydene was built in 1850 for John Finlay, who was a flax and tow merchant. The building is made from gold sandstone.  

From 1895 until 1915 Edward Robinson of "Robinson and Cleavers" (a department store in Belfast) lived here.  General Eisenhower lunched at the house in 1945 when it was owned by Sir Crawford McCullough.  McCullough was the instigator of the five minute (since shortened to two minute) silence for fallen soldiers.

In 1948 the house became a nursing home and more recently was renovated and is now a small family-run hotel.
