Die heutige Marienkirche wurde im 15. Jahrhundert anstelle eines archäologisch nachgewiesenen kleineren Vorgängerbaus aus dem 14. Jahrhundert errichtet. Sie ist eine dreischiffige Hallenkirche, der sich südlich ein niedrigeres Seitenschiff anschließt. Durch Artilleriebeschuss der Roten Armee geriet die Marienkirche am 26. April 1945 in Brand, der Dachstuhl wurde zerstört und Teile des Gewölbes stürzten ein. Am Heiligen Abend 1947 stürzten vier Pfeiler und Teile des Chorgewölbes ein. Weiterer Verfall durch Witterungseinflüsse führte schließlich am 21. März 1950 zum Einsturz von weiteren drei Pfeilern. Unter Pfarrer Johannes Kandeler kam es schließlich in den 1950er Jahren zu wichtigen Sicherungsarbeiten, in deren Zuge das südliche Seitenschiff 1953 als Notkirche geweiht werden konnte. In den 1970er Jahren schlossen sich weitere Arbeiten an Mauerkronen und Dächern an. Ab 1991 begann der planvolle Wiederaufbau der Kirche, der bis heute nicht vollendet ist. Bei Elektroarbeiten in der Sakristei wurden wertvolle Wandmalereien aus der Zeit um 1380/1390 entdeckt, die freigelegt und restauriert wurden.

Today's Marienkirche was built in the 15th century in place of a smaller predecessor building from the 14th century, which has been archaeologically proven. It is a three-aisled hall church with a lower side aisle to the south. Artillery fire from the Red Army caused the Marienkirche to catch fire on 26 April 1945, the roof truss was destroyed and parts of the vault collapsed. On Christmas Eve 1947, four pillars and parts of the choir vault collapsed. Further deterioration due to the effects of the weather finally led to the collapse of another three pillars on 21 March 1950. In the 1950s, important stabilisation work was finally carried out and the south aisle was consecrated as an emergency church in 1953. In the 1970s, further work was carried out on the wall crowns and roofs. The planned reconstruction of the church began in 1991 and has not yet been completed. During electrical work in the sacristy, valuable wall paintings from around 1380/1390 were discovered, which were uncovered and restored.
