"Safety Fence"

            While not a great photograph, this fence taught me a lot about the citizens of Hamburg, Germany.  It was set up, for some reason, about two weeks after a small fire under the bridge which is a large masonry arch.  We were staying in a Hotel with a perfect view of this area and saw the fence go up.  It was originally just the chain link panels.  The very first car that came along stopped, the driver got out of the car, moved the fence out of the way and proceeded on.  The authorities kept making it harder and harder to move until the area in front of the fence was just used for additional parking.  This is an intermediate stage.  A few weeks later we had some snow which filled the gutters up with ice. This made it easier for the Hamburg drivers to hop over the curb and drive down the sidewalk, which the did with great regularity.  After about a month of this the fence was taken down.  To the best of my knowledge, nothing was ever done to the bridge.

One thing, my travels have taught me is that preconceived notions about other countries and their people are largely wrong.
