The Kings of Cornwall - a photo on Flickriver

            Occasionally an evening is so much fun that I share a second image from it. Last Tuesday was one of those. I just felt the need to wander off to somewhere peaceful with the camera with a vaguely focused notion that I might try and photograph the lighthouse of Godrevy with the gently waving grasses of the dunes in the foreground. I did exactly that; in fact I even put my big boy pants on and went with a manual focus stack, on the big lens no less. I felt very brave. The images are ok, technically passable, nothing to write to the papers about, but pleasant enough. 

I've noticed a pattern recently. I'll set my shot up, do a couple of practice runs, and wait for the light, which in my case usually means the sunset. I'm quite happy to wait for a long time if I've arrived early, after all what's not to enjoy about standing on a sand dune watching the waves, the dunes, the lighthouse and the surfers at play. Once the golden moment arrives I'll take the composition several times, never sure which version will be best until I open Lightroom later. All is well, the sun has passed and I've got the shot and enjoyed the moment. What I'm never quite prepared for is the blue hour. Suddenly I see images in all kinds of places I hadn't noticed earlier, which sends me into a shutter happy frenzy as I catch three or four more subjects in the receding light. One of those was the ghostly image of Godrevy lighthouse reflected in the sand that turned into my previous post. It did rather well, thanks to the Flickr community.  

On this occasion there were still a few surfers in the sea. There always are when there's daylight, whatever the season as long as the sea isn't too biblical. These are the souls who rule the waters around here, each lost in their own contented worlds, much as I am behind the viewfinder. I'm an occasional body boarder - I've even got a half decent board - but I always feel like a distantly related minor hand me down cousin to these monarchs of the waves. The collection of VW Campervans in the car park beside the beach just adds to the aura of effortless cool they exude. Maybe I need surfing lessons. 

Still, if you catch one walking across the wet sand, his silhouetted reflection following him in the fading pink half light, he does make for an interesting composition.
