Sanlucar de Guadiana - a photo on Flickriver

            Just back from a few days of sunshine in Portugal in the hopes that a good dose of Vitamin D might get us through the oncoming winter.  

Friday saw us take a little escapade away from the coast and along the valley of the Guadiana River which separates Portugal and Spain, eventually arriving at the wonderful frontier town of Alcoutim, which is directly faced by the inviting sight of the Spanish Sanlucar de Guadiana on the east bank.  We ended up spending the whole afternoon here, enjoying the simple peace and surrounding echoes of birdsong.  Truly a place which stopped us in our tracks.  

A local information board told us that the two towns have been on friendly terms for hundreds of years, but that the Spanish Civil War brought a temporary end to the border crossing, a situation only remedied after Spain was restored to democracy after Franco's death.

The area brings an unusual experience to the first time visitor.  Portugal is (I think) the only country in mainland Europe that operates on Greenwich Meantime, while Spain uses Central European Time.  As the church clock on our Portuguese side of the river struck 3, it was echoed moments later by 4 bells in Sanlucar.  Surreal, and not something you hear in many other places I guess.
