Freshly excavated fresco, Pompeii (including ‘pizza’)

            The famed ‘pizza’ fresco in #Pompeii, freshly excavated and now fully uncovered (no, it’s not a pizza, but flatbread with fruits and savory items on top - the ancestor of the pizza!). Here we can see how the badly cracked wall has to be braced and will have to be permanently stabilized before tourists can ever visit this area. I was fortunate enough to be led into this area by two of Pompeii’s archaeologists. Lots of work remains to be done - they’re slowly uncovering the many rooms in this oddly partitioned house, which had been converted into a series of commercial spaces (large-scale bakery, laundry, et al). The skeletons of two women were found in the room next to this, crushed by the collapsing roof, which had tons of volcanic material on top.
