Marble head of the Roman empress Vibia Sabina, wife of Hadrian

            The head of refined workmanship pertains to a statue or bust portraying Vibia Sabina, the wife of emperor Hadrian, (reigned 117-138) with her head veiled.

The iconography of this portrait type, which also regularly appeared on coinage with the inscription "Diva Sabina Augusta", dates from the period of Sabina's deification following her death in 136/137 CE.

Of note is the bright orangish-red pigment that clings to the inside of Sabina’s veil. This was likely a primary coat for another pigment.
