Kite - a photo on Flickriver

Kite

            My dad bought us kites every Christmas and we'd wait for the first real days of spring to head to the baseball field down the road, throw down the ugly green leopard print blanket, and send up our kites. We'd spend an entire Saturday watching them, adding more and more reels of string until our kites were tiny colored specks in the sky. We'd let them fly all night and, on Sunday, we'd throw on our boots and head back to the field on a recovery mission, following our kite string across roads, over fences, through neighborhoods, over creeks until we found them miles away lodged in a tree, marveling at the distance they travelled. An entire weekend both lost and found, flying a paper kite with my dad.
