Glacier Bay National Park - a photo on Flickriver

            It is only fitting that the first pictures I post are of the Grand Pacific Glacier.  It is the main glacier credited with carving Glacier Bay.  It is about two miles wide!   It has retreated about 65 miles since gouging out Glacier Bay.

The Grand Pacific Glacier is no longer a tidewater glacier.  Therefore, the face of the glacier is covered in rock debris.  Because of its appearance, most people don't realize they are looking at the glacier responsible for the park.  As a geologist, I think that is kind of sad.

To the left of the Grand Pacific Glacier is the breathtakingly beautiful Margerie Glacier.

The photo was taken from the bow of the Carnival Legend as it set in the Tarr Inlet (actually a fjord).
