Second Fort Bowie, Arizona - a photo on Flickriver

            The second Fort Bowie was built in 1869.  The fort served as the nerve center for military campaigns against hostile Chiracahua Apaches led first by Cochise and then by Geronimo.

In September 1886, after their final surrender, Geronimo and his followers were brought to Fort Bowie.  There they were assembled on the parade ground and taken by wagons to the railroad for the long journey to exile in Florida.  

This marked the end of the nation's Indian wars.  It also was the end of the usefulness of Fort Bowie.  It was closed on October 10, 1894.
