            This cool male cream cahill is a member of the flatheaded mayfly clan and their nymphs have a very flattened appearance - think halibut - so they are aerodynamic and can cling to rocks found in fast stream riffles. Cream cahill nymphs scrape algae and diatoms off those rocks for their food source in the stream for about a year before maturing and emerging as adults - late spring for this species. Immature adults called duns can fly but are not sexually mature until they molt again into the spinner or imago stage. This can take a couple days for cream cahills and then the spinners return to the stream at sunset to mate. Immediately after mating, females lay their fertile eggs on the water and both sexes expire there. Trout fishers will try to match that spinner fall "hatch" with a #12 cream cahill pattern when they hit one happening on their favorite water. By the way, this guy's black eyes will fluoresce that ghostly white color under the right light conditions!
