Bayside Canning Company - Alviso CA - a photo on Flickriver

            Alviso served as a port during the mid 19th century for the Santa Clara Valley. There are still two families fishing for bay shrimp out of Alviso but the need for a cannery went away some time ago. The combination of re-engineering the bay with salt ponds for salt production, levees for flood protection, and mercury pollution from the Almaden mercury mines all impacted fishing on the southern end of San Francisco Bay. Murals were painted after the closure remembering the people who worked at the cannery and those who lived, worked, and played in Alviso.
