2023.10.15.023 RAVENNE - Saint-Appolinaire- le-Neuf - Mosaïques représentants le palais de Théodoric

            L'intérieur du palais est représenté en perspective rabattue : ce que l'on voit correspond à trois faces du péristyle, juxtaposés de face sur un seul plan, comme s'ils étaient dépliés. Entre les colonnes sont disposés des rideaux blancs brodés d'or qui remplacent des personnages effacés, voués à ce que les Anciens appelaient damnatio memoriae : ont ainsi disparu, laissant à peine, çà et là, quelques différences de couleurs dans la mosaïque, Théodoric (de manière quasi certaine), mais aussi son entourage et les membres de sa cour. Plusieurs des colonnes ont même conservé leurs mains que, curieusement, l'on n'a pas pris la peine d'effacer.

The interior of the palace is shown in folded perspective: what we see corresponds to three sides of the peristyle, juxtaposed on a single plane, as if they were unfolded. Between the columns are white curtains embroidered in gold, replacing figures that have disappeared, doomed to what the ancients called damnatio memoriae. Theodoric (almost certainly), but also his entourage and members of his court, have thus disappeared, leaving only a few colour differences here and there in the mosaic. Several of the columns have even retained their hands, which, curiously, have not been erased.
