One of the most well known sieges was laid against the fortress during the fifteen-year-war, on 23rd May 1597, when as a result of a trick – coupled with a clever military invention – Count Miklós Pálffy, the captain-general of Komárom, retook the fortress that had been captured by the Ottomans. 

The festival is named after this military invention called the patara, also referred to as a banger, which was used during the siege of the fortress. This explosive device regarded at the time as a “wonder weapon” was used by the brave soldiers of Captain-General Pálffy to break down the main gate of the fortress. A year later, the successful siege that liberated Győr was started with the new weapon introduced at Tata.
